Formed in 1988 by high school chums Tom Larkin and Jon Toogood, Shihad began playing in their home town of Wellington.

As a special warm-up for their Homegrown Festival performance in Wellington on Saturday night, the regular Adults line-up of Jon Toogood, Shayne Carter and Julia Deans will be joined for this Auckland show by drummer Gary Sullivan and percussionist Steve Bremner, both of whom also appeared on The Adults' acclaimed debut album.
The gig will take place at The Winchester, Auckland on Thursday 16 February.
Toogood, Carter and Deans are three of New Zealand's most respected musicians and the result of their live collaboration has been incredibly rewarding for both punters and band members alike.
Drummer Gary Sullivan has serious history within the NZ music scene, having played for Chug, Solid Gold Hell, JPSE, The Stereo Bus and Dimmer; and as well as performing on six of the twelve tracks on The Adults album, he also appeared on the Last Train To Brockville tour alongside Shayne Carter.
Steve Bremner comes from an orchestral background. A regular performer with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Vector Wellington Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, he has appeared on albums by Crowded House, Rhombus and Hollie Smith; and performed live with Shihad, Dave Dobbyn and Che Fu.
Don't miss this opportunity to see The Adults perform in this unique and intimate live environment.

Singer-songwriter Jackie Bristow is a southern girl at heart. Born and raised in Gore, this kiwi has found her wings. Beautiful songbird that she is, Jackie has flown halfway around the world with nothing more than her guitar and a dream.
Now living in Austin, TX, listeners can hardly discern her lilting kiwi accent when she sings her own brand of alt-country roots rock. After releasing her third album Freedom in New Zealand and Australia and touring in support of Shawn Mullins, Bristow returned to the USA in February 2011 as the opening act for internationally acclaimed guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel. Playing to sold out 1,500+ capacity theatres, Jackie is at home on the stage. 2011 was a very successful year in the US, touring and opening for some big names - Marc Cohn, John Waite, BJ Thomas, John Oates, Bettye Lavette, Joe Ely, Jimmy Lafave, Marcia Ball, Charlie Robison and Bob Schneider and in past years Daniel Lanois, Art Garfunkel, Phoebe Snow, Madeleine Peyroux, Jimmy Webb to name a few.
Her new album Freedom is steeped in powerhouse vocals, blazing guitars, and a storytelling narrative. Freedom has received national airplay and garnered generous praise from top critics. The Austin Chronicle calls Jackie Bristow "A class-act to watch" and Austin Music Entertainment says "Freedom ingratiates itself immediately with Bristow's slinking sexy, voice and her deftly blended rock-country-folk songwriting. She can do Texas Rock as well as the good 'ole boys." That may be true, but she can also reduce an audience to pin-drop silence as she sings an A Capella version of Aotearoa, a love song to her homeland. Whether singing about New Zealand or Texas, one thing is certain, Jackie Bristow knows how to dig deep and bare her soul.
Jackie has proven to be an artist that shows no sign of stopping. Music from Freedom is currently programmed into rotation at 7,000 different Starbucks locations nationwide. Her live performances have been captivating. One review on her February tour with Tommy Emmanuel on ChicoER (California) said "The show opened with New Zealand-born singer and guitarist Jackie Bristow. Opening for a musical giant like Emmanuel would seem a daunting task, but Bristow was relaxed as her soulfully seductive melodies reverberated within the auditorium. Her beautiful voice and earnest songs resonated with the audience, and they applauded her eagerly. Near the end of the show, Bristow joined Emmanuel on stage for an amazing duet that received a standing ovation".

Last September saw Little Bushman and Electric Wire Hustle team up for two sell out nights of vibrant psychedelic and soul music at one of Wellington's premier live venues, the San Francisco Bath House. Both bands and audiences alike enjoyed it so much they thought it best to take it on the road!
After the release of their third studio album Te Oranga, Little Bushman wowed audiences throughout Australia, including the prestigious Byron Bay Blues Fest and are currently planning a returning mid-2012.
"I'm pretty excited about these next shows with EWH - I reckon it's a perfect eclectic match for the audience to bliss out on and the last SFBH shows were electrifying. It's all about the fans... I wish I could be in the crowd, drowning in the frequencies - mean!" says LB's Warren Maxwell.
These shows also mark the final performances in New Zealand for Electric Wire Hustle this summer before they head on to Europe for six months via stop-offs in Australia and the USA. EWH are very excited to share some new material from their forthcoming sophmore album with the home crowd before taking it international with performances at WOMAD in Adelaide and SXSW in Austin, Texas in March.
"We're mad excited about this year. SXSW is going to be nuts. Austin is so rich with music and the festival is a massive opportunity for us. We've been on lock down in the studio for months and we've got a load of new material we're looking forward to debuting on tour. Heading on the road with the Bushies is going to be an awesome end to summer. Playing alongside them is always awesome and freaky at the same time - like a little bit of Kaitaia fire!" says EWH's Taay Ninh.
Both bands are also looking forward to the opportunity to play in Christchurch where they will perform in the beautiful garden setting of Deans Bush, the location of Riccarton House that was badly damaged in the earthquakes.
"We really wanted to get down and see our people in Christchurch but have had such difficulty securing a venue!" says EWH manager Hayley. Taste Events at Riccarton House have staged a series of outdoor concerts at Deans Bush to provide some entertainment and fun to Christchurch citizens and to help Taste Catering survive until the house can be rebuilt. "They reached out to us just in time and everyone is really keen to support the cause," adds Hayley.
Electric Wire Hustle will perform a solo show in Wellington at San Francisco Bath House where they will play an extended set to farewell their home crowd on Friday 2 March.
"We have traveled a lot during the last few years," says Taay, "but this will be our longest stint away from Wellington to date, so we want to leave everyone at home with something memorable."

Having traversed the globe with previous stops including Berlin, Toronto, London, Madrid, Melbourne and Cape Town, among others, the Red Bull Music Academy is excited to be landing in New York for 2012. Music makers of all styles, methodologies and levels of experience are invited to apply until Monday 2 April 2012, for what will be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
One of the most iconic cities on the planet, NYC has been immortalized in the pantheon of music - incubating genres like hip hop, disco, house, bop, no-wave and post-punk. NYC is inspiration central: a place where people from all nations collide, bringing music, culture and attitude with them. Music is everywhere, from cars cruising the block banging hip hop mix shows to the indie rock stars of tomorrow mashing drums in East Village practice spaces. Boomboxes blasting Willie Colón soundtrack outdoor domino games, and hipster troubadours play fiddles in the subway while kids shout the words to the latest A$AP Rocky single down the train aisles. After all, nothing's equivalent to the New York state of mind. The Red Bull Music Academy is excited to become part of this sonic kaleidoscope this fall. From Sunday 30 September through Friday 2 November 2012, the world-travelling music lab and festival will set up shop in the city for five weeks' worth of workshops, concerts, club nights, and all-round musical extravaganzas held all across the boroughs. Producers, vocalists, instrumentalists and DJs across all genres who will be at least 21 years of age by Sunday 30 September 2012 are eligible to take part and can download an application form from http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com and send it off with a selection of their tunes before Monday 2 April 2012.
On Friday 17 February this year Myele Manzanza, the driving rhythmical talent behind Electric Wire Hustle, steps out from behind the drum kit to celebrate both his 24 birthday and the release of his first solo album One.
The musically prolific Myele Manzanza has not only held down the drums as part of Wellington's Electric Wire Hustle for the past four years but has also drummed for Olmecha Supreme, Sheba Williams, The Recloose Live Band, The Jonathan Crayford Trio as well as for his father Sam Manzanza's Rhythm Africa Band and countless other musical projects.
Myele only started playing drum kit at age 14 but has been hand drumming traditional African rhythms with his father Sam Manzanza from a young age.
"Growing up music and rhythm was all around me and I understood it from a very early age. Through my father I learnt the language of the drum probably at the same time as I learnt to talk! My dad was one of the first Africans to perform traditional African & High Life music live in New Zealand & he has been a tremendous influence & inspiration on my career as a musician," says Myele.
Since graduating from the New Zealand School Of Music with a Degree in Jazz performance in 2008, Myele has dutifully dedicated himself to learning the new discipline of digital music production. In 2010 Myele was the only New Zealander selected to participate in the Red Bull Music Academy in London where he picked up a wealth of knowledge and skill from the many other participants from all over the world and expert lecturers such as Flying Lotus, Roots Manuva, Cluster, Moodyman, Dr Peter Zinovieff and DJ Zinc.
The rest of 2010 was spent living between Berlin & New York & touring with Electric Wire Hustle with laptop in hand. The fertile breeding ground of creativity of these cities provided the musical inspiration to put together his first album, aptly titled One.
Created primarily in Wellington, New York and Berlin in kitchens, bedrooms, hotel rooms, parks, balconies and backstage One draws on many influences and experiences. Rooted in Myele's musical "first language" of rhythm, the album also expresses his voice as a musician and producer outside of being a drummer which was a key motivation for Myele. "This album was a challenge to myself to broaden my own musical identity as a musician," he says.
The guest features on One are a diverse bunch and include Myele's own father, Congolese master percussionist and musician Sam Manzanza, NZ's own Ladi6, Bella Kalolo, Mara TK, Rachel Fraser and the unmistakable Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys. International guests include Charlie K from Philadelphia hip-hop group Writtenhouse, Canadian vocalist Amenta and James Wylie's Boston based woodwind section.
Myele Manzanza's debut solo album One will be released in New Zealand through Every Waking Hour and Rhythmethod 17 February 2012.
Myele will celebrate the release of One in Wellington on Friday 10 February at the San Francisco Bathhouse along with his former band Olmecha Supreme's new album, School Of Evil Laughter. In Auckland the celebrations will be held at Ponsonby Social Club on the Thursday 23 February.

Amiria Grenell's second album Three Feathers is the winner of the Best Folk Album Tui for 2012.
The Tui for the Best Folk Album was presented by the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) at the Auckland Folk Festival in Kumeu (West Auckland). The other finalists were Mel Parsons from Westland and Otago quartet The Chaps. Lyttelton-based Amiria recorded Three Feathers at the Grenell farm in Whitecliffs and family links run thick through the recording with brother Redford featuring on drums and guest appearances from partner Tola and Grenell's father, New Zealand country music legend John.
Other featured artists on the album include family friend Brent Thompson, Mara TK, Mark Vanilau, Tamara Smith, Gerard Masters and Jessie Moss. Released in September 2011, the album's title track and another track, Wind Blows South, are dedicated to a friend of the artist who died from cancer at the age of 22. Three Feathers ranges stylistically from folk to reggae, country to blues. At age 10 Amiria played the violin. She also began playing the guitar and making up her own chords. Her first performances were at folk festivals in the Blackboard Concerts, where she sang original songs about animals and saving the earth. Amiria is inspired by nature, world issues, being a young parent, her friends, family and Aotearoa. Her inspiration for song writing is also said to stem from growing up in a musical family. Her first EP, Cola Monti, was released in 2005 and the following year she made her first full length album, Kapowhai. Amiria has since graduated from NASDA (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art) with a Performing Arts Degree and currently lives in Lyttelton. RIANZ managing director Chris Caddick offered his "sincere congratulations" to Amiria, "Three Feathers is a truly superb album. We hope this fully deserved Tui will encourage more people to discover this gem of New Zealand music."
